What are GHS Labels / CLP Labels?

The Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of Classification, Labelling and Packaging of chemicals (CLP) is a system designed by the UN to standardise the information given to people who produce, transport or use chemicals, in order to reduce the risk to human health and the environment.

How to Comply with GHS/CLP Label Requirements

The hazards of a single substance, or mixture of hazardous substances, are communicated to the end user by means of a hazard warning label.

The label must include:  warning pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements, and supplemental statements as well as a contact number and address of the supplier.

GHS label pictogram Sizes

There are are a few general principles to be aware of regarding the size of GHS labels and pictograms:

  • The dimension of a GHS label should be related to package sizes
  • The minimum size of a pictogram on a GHS label should be related to the minimum size of the GHS label
  • The minimum size of a GHS pictogram on a GHS label is much smaller than a transport pictogram (100mm x 100mm) and the two should not be confused

GHS Compliant Label Materials

GHS labels must be chemical-resistant, weather-resistant, abrasion-resistant, UV light resistant, and must utilise a marine-grade label adhesive in order to satisfy GHS label standards for permanence.

When producing GHS Labels, there’s a lot to consider. Are the size of your labels correct? Are all of the necessary phrases listed? Do you have the correct pictograms? Do your labels need to be in multiple languages?
