IATA has published the list of significant changes that will come into effect with the 62nd edition of the Dangerous Goods Regulations.
IATA provides this list to assist users in identifying the main changes introduced.
These mandatory changes will come into effect on 1st January 2021.
What’s New in the 2021 IATA DGR?
Updates that shippers may need to be aware of include:
- Three new UN number entries for: UN 0511, UN 0512, UN 0513 for Detonators, electric.
- A new UN number entry for: UN 3549 Medical waste, Category A, solid.
- The addition of a new proper shipping name, Dangerous Goods in Articles to UN 3363.
- Many changes for Class 7, radioactive goods.
- Changes to the minimum dimensions of the lithium battery mark
- Clarification on the height of the UN/ID number and letters “UN” or “ID” on packages (minimum heights are still 12mm or 6mm).

Changes to Labelling & Marking
The format of the lithium battery mark has been revised. The mark may also now be a square with minimum dimensions of 100mm x 100mm.
This may be reduced to be not less than 100 mm x 70 mm, where the size of the package prevents the application of the full size mark.
The wording in the provisions for the application of the mark identifies that mark must be a square or rectangle – which permits the continued usage of the current mark which is 120mm x110 mm.
Mandatory compliance of the new edition of IATA DGR begin on 1st January, 2021. It is imperative that chemical products and hazardous substances shipped by air are in accordance with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
